Twitter 2017: still explains how the service works

Twitter has released two new ads that showcase what it is and how to use it. All indications are that the microblogging app is having some trouble getting new users to use it.

Both videos feature comedian Romesh Ranganathan, who explains some of the basic features of Twitter in a funny way that makes the videos seem more like a parody than a tutorial. Twitter

In the first, Romesh urges a timid potential user named Kenny G to sign up for the service. There’s no explanation for why the video looks like a thriller, unless the “poet” wants to say that Twitter users are having a better time.

The second video is a bit shorter, as Romesh follows another new user named Julio and explains to him how the Explore tab works.

Twitter has been a staple social network for years, and it's pretty strange that in 2017 it decided to publish videos showing people how to use it.

But Twitter's recent changes seem to indicate a bit of an identity crisis.

First, the company doubled the size of tweets this year, then rolled out a new verification system. It's almost as if it's trying to make the site something different from the service we've known so far.

Of course, we can't know if Romesh's presentations are enough to achieve the microblogging service's goal, but at least Twitter seems to be trying to be more user-friendly.
