The Guardian, in a recent report, said that the technology company Apple intends to establish a tactic. This wants Apple to monitor users to Siri and, with the help of its employees, rate them.
This claim by the Guardian is true. Apple recently said it would not resume the program until it had conducted a thorough review of the practice. It has also pledged to add the ability for users to opt out of this rating system for their recordings in a future software update.
The Guardian report, released last week, showed that Apple employees regularly listen to these recordings, which contain confidential and private information.
Most of this personal information was recorded through random triggers that Siri perceived. The Apple Watch is probably the gadget most prone to such triggers. The wearable can record 30-second snippets, which may not be that long in practice, but it is enough to betray a situation. According to testimonies, for example, it has often recorded the medical history of patients from their visits to the doctor.
The company's original idea was that the data used by Siri was to help better understand users. However, they never mentioned that this involved monitoring by Apple contractors. Additionally, current iOS doesn't allow users to opt out of facial recognition in photos if they wish, and this Siri revelation means that iPhones are listening to us without us knowing.
Of course, Apple is not the only company to have been accused of something similar. According to investigations, Google and Amazon also have the same tactic. The revelation of Google's program raised concerns because more than 1,000 audio clips were leaked, of which 1 in 10 were recorded accidentally. This was why the data protection commissioner in Hamburg in Germany banned Google from conducting these checks for three months, citing a possible violation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Amazon and Apple escaped this ban because their headquarters in Germany are in Munich and have a different commissioner.
