LG has started rolling out a new firmware update for its OLED and 'Super UHD' LCD TVs, which fixes two major issues. Including the recently reported image issue.
Updates 4.10.20 and 4.10.25 for the C8 / E8 / G8 / W8 and B8 respectively have already started reaching LG TVs across the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is receiving the update first, as it appears, because one of the two fixes it brings is full compatibility with the HLG HDR format used by the BBC to stream the new excellent documentary series called Dynasties on BBC iPlayer.
While the OLED 2018 and Super UHD TVs from LG support HLG, there was apparently an issue detecting HLG in the previous implementation of LG's firmware, which meant that the TV version HLG / 4K of Dynasties was not detected by the TVs – while previously it worked well with the HLG versions of the World Cup broadcast by the BBC.
Given how excellent the HDR/4K streams of Dynasties are, it is strongly recommended that owners of LG 2018 OLED TVs apply the new updated version as soon as it is available and continue watching the series. Moreover, the BBC website says that the 4K/HDR streams will disappear from iPlayer on January 8.
The other issue that the new update fixes – or in any case, greatly improves- concerns all users and outside the United Kingdom. According to users who have applied it, the latest updated version addresses a problem where the image is delayed in decreasing and increasing brightness when transitioning from dark to bright HDR scenes and vice versa.
However, by general consensus, it appears that this issue has been completely resolved for most users – and the majority of the content.
The seemingly positive results of this new update represent a strong and impressively fast (compared to previous issues) response from LG to matters that have been reported with its televisions, giving us hope that we will see more good things from the company.
