Facebook of features to its platform over the years, and many of them seem to have been forgotten as quickly as they appeared. Today, the company is announcing that it is revamping one of its oldest features, Collections, and updating it for the holiday season. If you didn't know what the Collections feature was before, you're definitely not alone, so let's take a look at what it's all about.
Collections is an evolution of Facebook's Save feature, which first appeared in 2014. Last year, Facebook began allowing users to organize their saved posts in Collections, providing a new level of organization for saving. Until now, these saved posts and created collections were only visible to those who created them, but that will soon change.
Facebook has made its Collections feature public, so you can now allow as many friends as you want to see your collections. The timing of this change is certainly no coincidence, as Facebook hopes that users will create new collections that will serve as wish lists for Christmas gifts that they can share with their friends and family. Those friends can add things to the collections you share with them, so you can use the feature to get ideas for parties, outings, or any other activity you can think of.
While users have many ways to create wish lists online — Amazon and Pinterest’s save feature (from which Facebook got its ideas for Collections) — Facebook may have an advantage over the rest. On Facebook, users can save a variety of different items, whether they’re individual posts, ads, videos, or Marketplace listings, so users can potentially create more detailed wish lists than they can on other platforms.
The ability to share your collections will roll out this week to all users.
