Windows 10's October update, also known as version 1809, is proving to be the worst Windows 10in three years. While Windows as a service certainly has its advantages, Microsoft's latest update has turned what could have been a very positive experience into a nightmare for users. The latest in a growing list of bugs is that the update, which fixes a few security issues, stops the functionality of Microsoft Media Player and the Windows 10 operating system.
This new bug comes from Build 17763.134, an update released on November 13th with the re-release of the October 2018 update. According to KB4467708, the update fixes some reported security issues and also renews security updates to some Windows programs, including the Edge and Explorer web browsers.
However, in addition to the fixes, it also brings some new issues, including the aforementioned bug. Although you will be able to play videos in Windows Media Player after the update, you will not be able to fast forward or rewind because the Search Bar does not work for “specific files” that Microsoft does not mention.
Of course, you could choose a different program for video files, but that also doesn't work properly. The update prevents "certain users" from setting default apps to use Win32 programs, like VLC for video files. Perhaps it's Microsoft's way of "encouraging" users to stick with UWP apps even for alternatives.
In both cases, Microsoft says it's working on a fix, but hasn't set a date for the Windows Media Player bug. The good news is that we won't have to wait long for the update to fix the problem. Let's just hope it doesn't introduce new bugs!
