Samsung is the company that makes the OLED displays used in the next-generation iPhones, but as part of Apple's plans to reduce its dependence on its rival, the company will soon start using panels from LG Display as well.
This isn't something we're hearing for the first time, as Apple and LG started working on OLED production plans in 2017, but according to a new report, the sixth-generation flexible displays recently passed all certification tests and can be used in iPhones.
Production will soon begin in Korea and LG will be responsible for supplying OLED screens for at least one iPhone model.
There are no concrete details at this point, but it's expected that the iPhone XS Max will be the one using LG displays, while the iPhone XS will continue to use Samsung displays.
Interestingly, analysts' estimates suggest rather modest sales of the iPhone XS, with the Max version and the more affordable iPhone XR being the top sellers this year.
The Samsung display used in the original iPhone X was one of the most expensive components of the device, and by adding LG to the list of display suppliers, Apple could significantly reduce production costs. However, that doesn't guarantee that iPhone pricing could drop too much, as the 2018 series has been released, with the 512GB iPhone XS being available at a price of $ 1,449 in the United States.
If Apple starts using LG's screens in the iPhone XS series, Samsung could see a slight drop in revenue this year, as Apple is one of the largest and most important customers given the volume of screens iPhone he orders.
At this point, it is not known when the Apple could start equipping next-generation iPhones with LG displays, but if the plan goes ahead as predicted, everything should come into effect in early 2019.
