The size of DDoS attacks increased by 500%

According to a report published by Nexusguard for the period from April to the end of June 2018, the average volume of DDoS attacks increased to more than 26 Gbps, marking an increase of 500%.

The study compared data from the same period in 2017 and showed that the highest number recorded quadrupled from last year, reaching 359 Gbps. The researchers took data from Botnet scans, honeypots, internet providers, and the traffic from attackers to their victims. In fact, the data showed that a large number of DDoS attacks came from IoT botnets and variants of the Satori malware.

500% DDoS boost

“Due to the large increase in IoT usage, malware targeting these devices has also increased. A large portion of the attacks that have been recorded come from IoT botnets.” Also relatively high was the percentage of attacks carried out with 0-day vulnerabilities, where many home routers were infected and added to a botnet.

“Telcos and other communications service providers will need to take additional precautions to protect the bandwidth they can provide from these large-scale attacks to ensure that customer service and operations continue without interruption.”

Nexusguard analysts recommend that communications service providers and other potentially vulnerable organizations be prepared and take the necessary measures to ensure that they can provide their services at all times. In the event that alternative operating plans do not exist, they should be created.

Finally, during this period, the size of the attacks increased significantly and at times had a significant impact on the operation of several communication service providers.
