Windows 10 will support tar and cURL

Microsoft plans to integrate tar and cURL into the command line tools in the next Windows 10 feature update, which is expected in March 2018.

While we don't yet know the full name of the next feature update, it's clear that it will include significant improvements and additions in contrast to the rather lackluster Fall Creators Update.

Linux users are probably shrugging their shoulders at this news, as these two command-line tools have been a part of Linux for a very long time. However, most Windows are still unable to extract TAR files without using third-party software, such as Bandizip or 7-Zip.

Microsoft points out that the two open source tools will work just like they do on *nix systems.

The tar application will be a command-line tool that allows you to create and extract compressed files in tar format, and the cURL application will be a command-line tool for transferring files. PowerShell already has some of these features built in, but the new addition will be for the command line.

The tar.exe command-line tool will work pretty much as you would expect. You can use the -x switch to extract the files, or -c to create them. You can also use the –help command to display all of the tool's options.

Curl also comes with many options, the main one being the -o switch which downloads a file from the URL you specified and saves it to the local system.
