Windows 7 is still on top, but Windows 10 is closing in

May 2018 brought very good news for Microsoft, as not only did Windows 10's usage share increase, but Windows 7's share also decreased, bringing the company's latest operating system closer to the top.

Windows 7 Windows 10 leading os

Windows 7 continues to be at the top despite a drop from 43.57% to 41.79%. On the other hand, Windows 10 went from 33.81% to 34.74% in just 30 days, and if this rise continues, it could surpass its predecessor by the end of the year. This would be ideal for Microsoft as it is not the first time that it has struggled to promote its latest operating system to users. The first time something similar happened was in 2014, when support for Windows XP ended.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update

With support for Windows 7 ending in January 2020, the giant is likely to face similar problems, as to date this operating system has survived the "aggressive" advertising and promotion of Windows 10, even after providing a free upgrade.

It is clear that Windows' market share is huge, as the only other operating system in the top 5 most popular right now is MacOS 10.13 with a 4.98% share.

The debut of the April 2018 Update may have helped boost Windows 10's share, although it's difficult to estimate exactly how many people upgraded their systems. The update is being pushed out to users at a steady pace, but for the impatient, there is also the option of a manual download.

On average, the release of a new version takes about 3 months, so by the end of the summer we expect that all capable systems will be able to update to the latest version.
