With just under two weeks to go until the next release of Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver for Linux fans, Canonical has announced Beta 2, a near-final release that showcases the changes coming with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
The Final Beta comes almost a month after the release of Ubuntu Beta 1 in March. From now on, there will be no changes and the new version will arrive on your machines on April 26. Based on the five-year support cycle, it will continue to receive updates until 2023.
The set of Beta builds includes Ubuntu Desktop images for the GNOME edition of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, UbuntuKylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio, and Xubuntu. These come alongside the final beta images for Ubuntu Server and Cloud systems.
Since you’ve been following the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS development cycle, you might know that it will ship with Linux Kernel 4.15 and GNOME 3.28 among its key features. Ubuntu 18.04 also offers a minimal, no-frills installation option, which only loads the basic desktop along with a browser and essential system utilities. This makes the update process much faster compared to previous installations.
The next milestone for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is the Final Freeze scheduled for April 19th.
