Apple ranks as the most attractive brand for teenagers, with 78% of teens owning an iPhone, according to a recent survey, but when it comes to Microsoft, Windows 10 is at the complete opposite pole.
New statistics released by music app developer Chronotron show that most users who purchased the app from the Microsoft Store are over 50 years old, while users aged 18 to 24 only account for a small share of downloads.
Without a doubt, these statistics cannot be extended to the entire platform, but it is an indication that new users may not be as interested in Windows 10 as they are in other products like the iPhone.
And there are many reasons for this. First of all, it's worth noting that younger users are more committed to mobile devices than to PCs, while older users tend to stick with a particular product, be it hardware or software, for a longer period of time. Just look at Windows XP and you'll understand this.
Then, older users are more likely to buy an app that costs $29.99, even though you would normally expect a music app to be very appealing to a younger audience.
Chronotron developer Ianier Munoz explains that Microsoft itself needs to improve how it shares its vision for the consumer market, as younger age groups are more willing to try other platforms and leave Windows behind.
“The push to get desktop apps into the Microsoft Store is a good move, though I doubt it will help revitalize the Windows user base. On the other hand, the Dev Center Benefits website — a rewards program for app developers — hasn’t been updated in a year. So, yes, Microsoft could work harder to tell developers what their vision is for the consumer market,” he wrote.
Microsoft's official message is that Windows 10 is the right choice for all age groups, as it combines features for artists, creators, gamers, and Office. However, the lack of a mobile device with Windows 10 seems to be hurting the platform, especially when we look at these statistics.
