Although it can work on new iPhone releases, laptops, and even smart glasses, Apple has not only the devices in recent years, while the company also invests in many new services that could see the light of day in the coming years.
One of the first to get the green light could be a video subscription service that would compete with Netflix, with an analyst projecting that Apple will unveil it during 2018.
Paolo Pescatore, vice president of multimedia and media at CCS Insight, told CNBC that Apple's new video service will focus primarily on original content, which the company is able to provide, although history has shown that this is not as easy as it sounds.
Apple's previous TV shows, Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke: The Series, were anything but successful, but Apple appears to be looking for more similar content for a potential subscription video service. Most recently, the company released a new TV drama series starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
“Everyone tries to get into the video area. When you look at Apple, it has a very strong hardware offering and its services business is on the rise“, said the analyst. “The real battlefield is in the area of original content, and Apple would be very suitable to provide original content”, continued Pescatore.
Becoming a Netflix rival isn't something Apple can do overnight, but it seems like a goal the company will strive for.
It is obvious that there are no available official information regarding such a project, but we await more details to see if there is a chance to soon learn whether Apple is interested in launching a Netflix competitor.
