Windows 10: Stealing a phone is now much more difficult than it was 10 years ago, mainly due to advanced security features that allow owners to locate their devices and send commands remotely such as locking or wiping data.![]()
Apple is one of the companies that has focused a lot on anti-theft technology, and features like Find my iPhone are now widely adopted by various phones, and it seems that Microsoft is also working on something similar for its Windows 10 devices.
According to a patent, Microsoft will equip its Windows 10 devices with technology that allows the owner to find them even when there is no internet connection.
The new technology is likely to be aimed primarily at laptops, but any device that has LTE support can benefit from it.
Essentially, the device can receive a shutdown command from the shutdown service over the network and acknowledge the command to the shutdown service again over the network. Therefore, attempts by an unauthorized owner of the device to prevent its shutdown by removing the authentication service are futile.
In other words, thanks to this feature, device tracking could work even when there is no network available. Microsoft even plans to sign partnership agreements with carriers around the world to achieve this.
We have encountered similar features in other companies such as Apple, which has found a way to improve Find my iPhone with technology that could locate your device even when it is turned off.
