Snapchat recently acquired app maker Zenly for $250 to $350 million and is apparently already using its technology.
Zenly, based in France, created a location app that allows users to see where their friends are, but in a way that does not drain your phone's battery. It is a fairly popular app in Europe as it satisfies everyone's need to be constantly informed about any new happenings.
Snapchat has introduced Snap Maps, a new feature that allows users to see where their friends are on a map. Users will be able to browse photos and videos from specific locations around the world, including news events.
As expected after the rollout of Snapchat's new feature, many rushed to point out its similarity to Zenly's app, and understandably given the company's acquisition by Snapchat.
Although the company hasn't had the opportunity to partner with a social network to integrate its amazing location-based feature since Twitter in Zenly last September, Snapchat is giving it that opportunity. It's worth noting, of course, that Zenly will continue to operate independently.
One reason why Zenly was likely a hot acquisition target compared to other location‑tracking app makers is that its app is more power‑efficient. Essentially, instead of constantly monitoring users' locations, which drains users' batteries, the app only activates when friends use their phones.
