Microsoft today announced the official end of support for Windows Vista, an operating system that has been around for the past 10 years, and can be considered a failure for the company.
In a new post on the company's support forum, Microsoft announced that the operating system will no longer receive updates and security patches starting April 11, 2017. The company also said it is ending all free or paid support options.
“Microsoft has supported Windows Vista for the past 10 years, but the time has come to invest our resources in more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences.”
Vista users will be able to continue using their systems after the end of support, but developers will gradually stop developing software for the platform. Of course, there will be a risk of falling victim to various security vulnerabilities.
Microsoft also announced that it will “stop providing the download of Microsoft Security Essentials software” for Vista.
