Apple has just released the iOS 10.3 update. But before you install the new iOS 10.3 for your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, make sure you have a good backup of your data. We usually say this before every update, but this time there is a very good reason.
The new iOS 10.3 release may sound like a small update, but it actually contains a very big change. Apple is using this update to switch the file system used by iPhones and iPads from HFS+ to Apple's new file system (Apple File System).
The Apple File System is a huge improvement over the outdated (30-year-old) HFS+. It brings new features, such as optimization for solid state storage, or SSD, strong encryption, better file write times (sub-nanosecond), and many storage-saving improvements.
With the new file system, it is very likely that we will see future iPhones with SSD drives….
Apple plans to make the same file system available on macOS, iOS, tvOS, and even watchOS.
