Strange things seem to be happening in Windows Update these days as Microsoft has pushed out an anonymous Windows driver update just hours after re-releasing two telemetry updates for Windows systems. What is the company preparing?
This time, however, the mysterious update is not installing successfully on a large percentage of computers, which could ultimately be a positive as there are no details about its purpose.
The new update arrives in Windows under the name Microsoft – WPD – 2/22/2016 12:00:00 AM – 5.2.5326.4762 and is an update for Microsoft Windows Portable Device, the purpose of which has not been determined, as we mentioned above.
Many claim that the new version is aimed exclusively at Windows 10 Mobile devices, so its goal is to create phones that have access to Windows 10 computers. Note that installation failure is indicated by the following message “error 0x800f0217”.
Finally, a description of the drivers from Microsoft for Windows Portable Devices (WPD) reveals that the new update does indeed concern Windows 10 mobile phones.
"Microsoft provides several drivers for the main protocols and devices including Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP), Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) and Mass Storage Class (MSC)," a company spokesperson said.
At the moment, there is no confirmation from Microsoft regarding the mysterious update. In the meantime, if the update fails to install on your device, it would be a good idea to hide it until an improved version is offered. Until then, we will have to wait until the official announcement.
