DDoS attack takes down New York Times, Reddit, Twitter, Spotify & eBay

A very large DDoS attack hit hundreds of websites today, including: New York Times, Reddit, Twitter, Spotify, and eBay.

The attack was actually centered on Dyn, a company from New Hampshire that offers a platform for optimizing online website performance.ddos

The service includes application testing and monitoring tools, analysis and traffic routing infrastructure, ensuring that end users are not affected by slow response times.

Dyn's DNS service acts as a bridge between domain names and IP addresses.

The DDoS attack that took place earlier today aimed to “disrupt” the service with a flood of data to cause a network outage, which was mainly felt on the East Coast of the US from 11 a.m. UTC, although Dyn reports that service was restored at 13:20 UTC.

The DDoS attacks have seen a significant increase in recent years, as there are reports showing an increase of up to 125 percent between 2015 and 2016.

Naturally, large companies frequently experience such attacks from hackers who seek either to deliver a message, or to become known and promote their capabilities or tools.
