Satya Nadella: Windows is the most open platform there is

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was at the Gartner Symposium ITxpo 2016 held in Orlando to talk about the company's products (Windows and Office) but also about the acquisition of LinkedIn , which caused a stir after the public announcement of its acquisition by the company.

A particularly poignant moment during Nadella's speech was when he referred to Microsoft's operating system, which the CEO said has embarked on a long-term transformation, with the ultimate goal of bringing all platforms together and merging PCs, smartphones and game consoles.

"Windows is the most open platform there is," Satya Nadella said, according to ZDNet, adding that "it's for users, developers and IT together. This approach brings them together, and when it brings them together, something magical happens."

Microsoft's efforts to create a unified operating system are mainly based on universal apps, which are supposed to run on all Windows devices, will have the same look and feel, but will adapt to different screen sizes, without affecting the user experience.

Of course, Mr. Satya Nadella, there is also the opposite view.

The platform of universal apps has been frequently criticized by many. One of them is Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, who stated (and very correctly in my opinion) that Microsoft does not provide an open platform, but exactly the opposite.

“Let's take a look at what happens with developers, specifically: If they request to become a Microsoft Registered Developer, and Microsoft accepts, what happens to the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app they developed and submitted to Microsoft;”

“If Microsoft accepts the application, then it will digitally sign it using its DRM to return it to the project owner. Only then will the developer be able to distribute it to users, and users will be able to install it manually to run on any machine with the default Windows 10 settings. Is this open? Can you judge it?”
