A group of hackers calling themselves “Pravyy Sector” are blackmailing the Polish government on Twitter, threatening to release data stolen from Poland’s Ministry of Defense if the government does not pay $50,000 to a Ukrainian bank account or a Bitcoin address.
The name “Pravyy Sector” is also used by an extremist Ukrainian nationalist organization operating in Russia. The hackers claim to represent the group, but there is no evidence to support their claims.
To prove that they are in possession of authentic data, the group leaked on Twitter some of the files it allegedly stole from the Department of Defense.
So currently, scanned documents and screenshots are circulating showing the desktop of a Department of Defense computer. Also freely circulating is an Excel file with 1,368 entries that appear to be local Intranet files containing LDAP paths, connection times, incorrect connections, and other similar data.
Later in the day, the hackers continued to distribute data and leaked a document purporting to prove Poland's participation in the US PRISM program. This file has since been deleted and no longer exists online.
The Polish newspaper Wyborcza reported that a spokesman for the Polish Ministry of Defense gave a classic CIA response, saying that they neither deny nor confirm the incident.
