Serious allegations were made today by the central bank of Bangladesh (Bangladesh Bank), according to which hackers breached its account at the Federal Reserve Bank of the USA and stole a large sum of money.
The complaints were made by Bangladesh Bank executives, stating that bank employees noticed that a large portion of their funds held at the US Federal Reserve Bank of New York were missing.
At the Federal Reserve Bank branch in New York, there are accounts from over 250 foreign banks, governments, and large financial institutions, due to the bank's high-end security measures.
Officials of the central bank of Bangladesh refused to disclose the exact amount that was stolen, but so far they have managed to recover part of it after cooperating with local authorities who specialize in money laundering activities.
However, on the other hand, a Federal Reserve spokesman, in a statement to Reuters, refused to acknowledge the incident, saying that their bank had not detected any signs of an intrusion.
Although the Federal Reserve Bank of New York is considered a benchmark for physical and electronic bank security, this particular branch had previously been breached electronically in 2012, when the British hacker Lauri Love managed, using SQL injections and ColdFusion vulnerabilities, to gain access to some of the bank's data. The British authorities eventually arrested Love in October 2013.
