In less than three months, Google will stop operating its Picasa service. The announcement was made today on the Picasa blog, via a notification that appeared in the header of the main website.
The Picasa service was launched in 2002 by Lifescape, and was purchased by Google in 2004. Initially, it was a great success, but with the advent of mobile devices, many people turned to other solutions.
More and more users started using Facebook or Instagram to store and manage their photos, as these services also support mobile devices.
To address the phenomenon, the company announced last May the launch of the Google Photos service, which, unlike Picasa, focuses more on mobile devices than computers.
So today the company announced that it doesn't make sense to allocate resources and human resources to two different services that do the same thing.
“There's an easy way to transfer photos from Picasa to Google Photos”
Picasa users can easily transfer all the albums they created on the service to Google Photos. If you use the service and want to transfer your photos, all you need to do is sign up for Google Photos.
The Picasa Web Albums service will shut down on May 1, 2016, while development of the Picasa application will cease on March 16, 2016.
