Information from the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate regarding an attempt to defraud citizens regarding promised prizes and gifts through Multimedia Information Services (Multimedia)

The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate draws the attention of citizens regarding calls to premium-rate numbers, which they are asked to make in order to claim prizes and contest gifts.
In particular, in recent days, several complaints have been recorded from citizens who received telephone calls, with the caller's details hidden, in which they were informed that they had won a multi-day free vacation, but in order to claim their prize, they must contact the company organizing the competition by telephone via premium rate numbers (numbers 901XXXXXXXXX).
These incidents are already being investigated by the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate, however, in order to avoid phenomena of defrauding citizens and losing money through telephone bills, the following is highlighted:
- Telephone calls to premium rate numbers and the use of Multimedia Information Services(https://www.eett.gr/opencms/opencms/EETT/FAQS/Faq_YPP.html)entail particularly increased costs of calls and SMS messages (charged either per call, per minute, or per incoming/outgoing message).
- Participation in company competitions with prizes requires acceptance of the "terms of participation", which must be filed with a notary.
In case you receive harassment from Multimedia Providers for reasons of Multimedia promotion, or you have registered with Multimedia without your consent, you can contact the Personal Data Protection Authority (www.dpa.gr).
If you believe that the privacy of your communications has been threatened or compromised through a PII, you can contact the Communications Privacy Assurance Authority (www.adae.gr).
You can also contact the National Telecommunications and Post Commission (www.eett.gr) for the examination of complaints regarding ensuring the correct information of consumers about Multimedia and the control of consumer billing when they do not receive service, if you have already contacted the Multimedia Providers, but no solution has been found to the dispute between you.
