(Reuters) - Police arrested a 12-year-old girl in Colorado on Friday accused of trying to kill her mother twice with bleach after she took her iPhone. Here’s what happened:
Boulder County Sheriff Heidi Prentup said the mother drank the caustic liquid in one of the two attempts her daughter made. Both attempts occurred within a week.
On March 2, the girl put bleach in a coffee at breakfast she had prepared for her mother, Prentup said.
"The mother noticed the smell of bleach in the coffee and thought her daughter probably hadn't cleaned the cup properly," the police statement said.
The woman, whose name was not released by authorities for obvious reasons, went to a local hospital and was discharged home within hours. However, her ordeal continued a few days later.
Four days later, the 12-year-old allegedly put the bleach in a carafe of water her mother had in her bedroom. When the woman smelled the bleach again, she knew something was wrong and suspected her daughter.
“Then she learned that her daughter had hatched a whole plan to kill her because she took her iPhone,” police say.
Prentup said the mother reported the girl to police, and that authorities gathered enough evidence to take her into custody.
The girl was transferred to a juvenile detention center on Friday, where she will be held until bail is posted.
