Celebrating 25 years of Photoshop

The British newspaper "The Guardian" featured an issue in its online edition yesterday dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Photoshop.

Photoshop

Seen with a humorous tone, the piece spoke about the various misunderstandings and misunderstandings that the (millions of) small and large interventions in the world of images have created over time.

Joking aside, of course, it is a fact that we are talking about one of the most important computer programs ever created. And this is not because of these interventions; of the stars of the entertainment industry who look brighter than they are, of the artistic photographers who now spend more time on the computer than in the darkroom, or of the graphic designers who "cut and sew" with a thousand times more ease than in the past. It is mainly the way in which we now see images. In short, we are suspicious. The truth of the image, of the photograph, was for decades almost indisputable.

Of course, connoisseurs always had "tricks" to fool or mislead the viewer, but their capabilities were limited. They could not convincingly present something that was not even there.

In the Photoshop era, on the contrary, a highly skilled person can insert practically anything and - most importantly - leave so few traces that even the most experienced eye has difficulty detecting them. In addition, in recent years, Photoshop technology has been rapidly spreading in the field of moving images and video. Today, we observe images on the Internet, in print and elsewhere with the "secret" knowledge that they do not fully correspond to reality. And this, if we think about it, is at least strange..
