What devices with Android 5.0 Lollipop can do

With Nexus Player and Android Lollipop, Google expands its platform.

The operating system allows songs, photos, apps, and even the user's web search history that are available from one user's Android device to be available on any other Android device, "instantly.".

Let's say you're listening to a song on your phone while walking. When you get home, when you turn on your Nexus Player, Lollipop will notify it that you were listening to the last song by your favorite band at the 28th second and will continue playing it "as it should." The same can happen when switching the display of a video from the tablet to the TV and back, or even with a game.

Google is referring to the special care it took to ensure that the user does not feel that anything is changing in the interface environment, with an approach to user interface design across devices called Material Design. In addition, content responds to your touch and voice in more natural ways and transitions are more transparent, Google adds.

  • Google also talks about increased user control over the device. It specifically states that a user of a Lollipop device can be selective and define which calls or notifications they will accept, depending on their schedule. When an acceptable notification arrives, it will appear directly on the lock screen, freeing the user from having to unlock their phone, search for it and see it.
  • Lollipop also brings a new (mysterious) feature that extends battery life by up to 90 minutes, provided that the battery of the smartphone running Android Lollipop is sufficiently depleted. We will have to come back to this issue, since it is widely known that autonomy depends on a number of parameters and is closely dependent on use, so we assume that the manufacturer is referring to a battery sufficient for a few emergency voice calls within an hour and a half of the moment the battery would otherwise be depleted.
  • Lollipop also allows for different user accounts to be set up - especially useful on tablets. Guests will be able to use the device in Guest Mode, so they don't have access to personal content.
  • The version of Android that succeeds KitKat brings new ways of locking: one can use the standard PIN, or password, a pattern, but also Smart Lock, with which the device will only be unlocked when paired with another device designated as trusted, namely the smartwatch or the car with the relevant equipment.
