Bad news for Mac users: their systems are at risk from a sneaky malware. The malicious software is targeting Apple computers and connecting them to a botnet.

The malicious developers developed a backdoor called “Mac.BackDoor.iWorm.” The malware gains access to Mac computers and uses Reddit to connect the hacked computer to a command and control server. Once it hits a computer, iWorm uses Reddit’s search function to discover messages sent by its creators. These posts (found on the Minecraft subreddit) provide the addresses of the servers, and the software it will use to connect the infected computer to the botnet.
This way, malicious users can control the infected systems, and use them for DDOS attacks or spamming, and various other things.
Doctor Web researchers reported that most of the infected Macs they discovered are located in the United States. The source of the infection has not yet been discovered, that is, the researchers do not know how the malware entered the victim's computer. However, it is most likely due to an unnecessary click. It is known that one click is enough.
According to the security firm, there are 17,658 infected Macs, actively being used by hackers.
If you have a Mac, to avoid the risk of infection, keep your software up to date. Set GateKeeper to only run applications with valid digital signatures, and use a password on your computer to prevent access to Admin accounts. Of course, do not use the word “password” as a password.
