As expected, Apple released iOS 8 for its compatible devices on September 17, with the update also available in Greece.
The iOS 8 update is available for free for compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices and the upgrade can be performed either via the device's WiFi , or via a computer and the iTunes application .
The new iOS 8 comes with several new options and features, the main ones being:
- Ability to use third‑party keyboards
- QuickType functionality for the keyboard with word predictions
- Upgraded Messages app
- Tap and Talk feature for audio messages
- Group Messaging for categorizing messages and conversations
- Family Sharing so that all family members have the same content (apps, games, songs) available
- iCloud Drive support
- Improved notification center with widgets
- Improved Spotlight like in Mac OS X Yosemite for searching local files/programs and simultaneously on the internet and in the App Store if it is an application.
- Health app, which collects information from other health apps and presents it in its own way
- Improved Siri
- Improved App Store with new features
Compatible devices that can upgrade to the new iOS 8 are: iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPod 5th generation, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad mini with Retina.
Upgrade Process:
Via mobile and WiFi connection (Over The Air):
First of all, the device must be charged and connected to the WiFi network, and there must be at least 1GB of free space, while some report that the free space must reach 5GB!
It would be a good idea to back up your device's files beforehand , as it is possible that all files will be lost during the upgrade to iOS 8 .
The backup is done via iCloud, from “Settings-> iCloud -> Storage & Backup” and then selecting “Back Up Now”.
Finally, the only thing left is to perform the upgrade from the menu “Settings -> General -> Software Update” and then select the “Download and Install” where after the download, the message “Install” will appear, which we select.
Via computer (Mac or Windows):
Again, the device must be charged, and it would be good to have a backup beforehand as described above.
The latest version of iTunes must be installed on the computer and then the device is connected to the computer, where it will be recognized through iTunes
Then you select “Check for update” and click the “Download and update” option.
