A team of researchers from the Technical University of Denmark has used a single multi-core fiber optic cable to carry 43 Terabits per second , creating the world's fastest fiber optic network. Google Fiber looks like a 1996 dial-up connection from a telephone line.
How fast is 43 terabits per second? As Extreme Tech, that means you can download a 1 gigabyte movie in 2 milliseconds. When you blink your eye, the time it takes is between 100 and 400 milliseconds. So you can download thousands of movies in the blink of an eye.
The DTU team used a single fiber made from materials from Japanese telecommunications company NTT, and their technique is actually commercially viable. This research could (and should!) be used to create much faster network connections.
