What is Privacy Badger? The Electronic Frontier Foundation has released a browser plug-in to help you determine which websites are tracking you. The plug-in is called Privacy Badger browser and is in beta. It began development in May and today it was released for the first time as a Public Beta.
The tool will show you how websites track your behavior and allow you to control what information these websites can and cannot see.
There are other plug-ins that offer similar services. The EFF explains, however, that all require some custom settings to block unwanted trackers. The Privacy Badger browser uses rigorous algorithmic methods to detect and prevent such activities. “It creates code that could actually be adopted by other extensions, or mainstream browsers, to give users maximum control over who is doing what when they visit various websites.”
The tool looks for third-party domains that serve images, text, and ads on pages. If a third-party server is tracking your activities without your permission, Privacy Badger will automatically block the content from being displayed.
The app comes with a few toggles. Green means the site isn't tracking your activities, yellow indicates there's some tracking but the site is whitelisted, and red means you're about to enter a site that's heavily tracking your online habits.
