BlackBerry has reached a collaboration agreement with Amazon, which will allow the former's smartphones to access 240,000 Android applications, which the latter offers through its online app store.
The agreement will take effect in the fall, when the new BlackBerry 10.3 smartphone operating system is expected to be released , which will be able to support applications based on the Android platform .
According to Reuters, the deal will allow Canadian BlackBerry to offer consumer applications on its devices, while it will be able to focus on creating applications that are more business and productive.
The deal with Amazon is the latest in a series of moves by BlackBerry's new CEO, John Chen, to keep the company alive and regain lost ground against competition from Apple and Samsung.
It's worth noting that the BlackBerry 10 operating system was designed to support apps built for Google's Android operating system. However, Google never licensed the Play Store, its own online app store, for use on BlackBerry devices.
So, the Canadian company turned to Amazon, whose operating system and related applications use the Android core and can also "run" on BlackBerry's operating system.
