CERN's interactive exhibition at the Planetarium

An impressive interactive exhibition created by CERN with the aim of bringing the general public closer to the experiments of the large underground accelerator, will be hosted by the Eugenides Foundation from April 12 to May 31.

CERN

The exhibition for adults and children over ten years old titled «Accelerating Science» which was created by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) with the support of the Dudley Wright Foundation, has already been presented in many European countries, sparking the interest of thousands of small and large visitors to the mysteries of nature.

The exhibition is being brought to Greece by the Evgenidis Foundation and the Hellenic-German Education, in collaboration with the Physics Department of the EMFE School of the National Technical University of Athens, the Department of Nuclear Physics and Elementary Particles of the University of Athens, the Institute of Accelerator Systems and Applications and the Association of Greek Physicists.

The report presents in a simple way exactly what is happening in the underground facilities of CERN, the most important international research center in the physics of elementary particles. It also presents in an understandable manner the fundamental scientific knowledge about the basic structural components of matter and the evolution of the universe, focusing on CERN's decisive contribution and its experiments.

Interactive touch screens and games promise to capture the interest of young people. At the same time, scientists from various specialties, together with specially trained undergraduate and graduate students, will take on guiding visitors through the secrets of CERN.

Admission is free (with a strict priority order) and the detailed visitation schedule for the general public is as follows:

– Saturday 12 April through Holy Thursday 17 April, hours 11:00- 17:00.

– From Good Friday the 18th to Easter Monday the 21st of April the exhibition will remain closed.

– Tuesday the 22nd to Sunday the 27th of April, opening hours 11:00- 21:00.

– From 30th April to 31st May: Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday hours 17:00- 21.00 (excluding official holidays), and every Saturday and Sunday hours 11:00- 21:00 (excluding official holidays).

Also the organizers have designed educational different programs for school groups The school groups of the last two grades of Primary and all grades of Middle and High School will be accepted, with free entry, in the mornings from Monday to Friday and only by prior reservation at phones 210 9469631- 632 (contact hours: Monday to Friday 09:00- 14:00).

Parallel training program

Alongside the exhibition, a specially designed educational program will be carried out, which will also be hosted at the Eugenides Foundation and is aimed at primary and secondary education teachers (positive direction). It will focus on the teaching of the Physical Sciences, with the goal of presenting applications and proposals that can make the visit to the exhibition or the virtual visit to CERN more effective, integrating it into the educational process.

The program was designed by a team of scientists and educators from the Department of Research and Development of the Hellenic-German Education and the Department of Physics of the University of Athens, it will last two hours and includes two sections:

– The educational workshop «The experiment of the century in the School Laboratory» that will take place on 29/4, 5/5, 12/5 and 20/5, hours 15:00- 17:00.

– The educational workshop «From quarks to the Universe with virtual and remote labs: Connecting the great ideas of science» which will take place on 13/5 and 27/5, hours 15:00- 17:00.

Participation in the educational program is free, but reservation of a seat is required at the phone numbers 210 9469631- 632 (Monday to Thursday: 8.30- 20.00, Friday and Saturday:8.30- 15.30). All participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Greece and CERN

Greece is a founding member of CERN since 1958. Scientists from the country have participated with a great contribution in many earlier experiments at CERN, such as DELPHI, ALEPH, etc. Today large groups of researchers from Greek universities and research centers participate, contributing significantly to the ATLAS, CMS and ALICE experiments.

During this period the accelerator has stopped its operation for maintenance and upgrade reasons. It will return to "work»" within 2015.
