Trustmark National Bank and Green Bank NA have filed a lawsuit against security firm Trustwave and the merchant company for damages they suffered from the Target Corp data breach and leak , accusing the company of failing to identify security vulnerabilities, Reuters reports .
The two banks are seeking more than $5 million in damages from defendants Trustwave Holdings and Target.
The banks allege that vulnerabilities in Target's system were either not discovered by Trustwave or were ignored, giving hackers access to millions of card accounts and personal data, the lawsuit states.
About 40 million card payment records were stolen from the store, along with 70 million other records containing the company's customer information, such as addresses and phone numbers.
It should be noted that all of the breach data was freely available online, and card numbers were being sold on underground forums. It was probably expected that someone would take legal action, as millions of people were affected by this hack.
Of course, we should also remember that the commercial company also missed many opportunities to prevent the hackers who were responsible for the unprecedented data breach. The fact that it did not immediately inform consumers is also important because it gave hackers room to exploit the card numbers they had at their disposal.
The lawsuit also alleges that the retailer granted access to its network to a third-party vendor that did not follow acceptable security practices.
Thus, the company that was attacked faces dozens of potential lawsuits from banks that could seek compensation for the millions of dollars in damages caused.
Neither company has made any statements.
