On Thursday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a campaign speech, "We will eradicate Twitter and the like, and I don't care at all what the international community says. Everyone will realize the strength of the Turkish Republic."
"Twitter" is one of the social media platforms through which recorded telephone conversations of both Erdoğan himself and his relatives and associates have been leaking for some time.
The management company of the online media Twitter Inc announced on Thursday that it is looking into reports that the service has been banned in Turkey.
The company posted a message on its services advising Twitter users in Turkey that it is possible to send the Tweets they want using text messages via their mobile phone.
Twitter users in Turkey reported widespread outages in the early hours of Friday morning, hours after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to shut down the popular social media platform.
Some users try to open the Twitter.com website but see an announcement apparently from Turkey's telecommunications regulator (TIB).
The statement cited four court rulings as the basis for blocking the website, from which some users have been leaking recorded telephone conversations of both Erdogan himself and his relatives and associates in recent weeks.
