Bitdefender: Scam e-mails from allegedly blocked people in Ukraine

Fraudsters are trying to trick Internet users in every way, always using “catchy” facts. So the last thing they thought of was to use the situation that has arisen in Ukraine.

A scam email presented by Bitdefender has the subject line “Help… Douglas Crandall” and states:

“I am writing this with tears in my eyes. I came to Kiev, Ukraine for a few days of vacation, and unfortunately, we were robbed in the hotel park. They took all our cash, credit cards and mobile phones, but luckily we still have our passports.”

The scammers use the sob story to claim they need a “loan” of $2,500 to pay their hotel bills. They claim the hotel manager won’t let them leave unless they pay their bill. The scammers ask for the money to be wired via Western Union. This of course makes it very easy for them since they can disappear without a trace once they get the money.

It goes without saying that such messages should be ignored, as cybercriminals know exactly that their story can sound quite convincing.

But on the other hand, who decides to go on vacation with their family to Ukraine right now?
