Sony Computer Entertainment's Project Morpheus prototype features a head-worn display with 1080p resolution and a 90-degree field of view.
The prototype of a virtual reality set for the PlayStation 4 was revealed by Sony at the GDC 2014 conference in San Francisco.
According to a blog post by senior company executive Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Computer Entertainment's Project Morpheus prototype features a head-worn display with 1080p resolution and a 90-degree field of view. Accelerometers and gyroscopes built into the system track the user's head movements, in conjunction with the PlayStation Camera.
“As your head rotates, the image of the virtual world also rotates in real time. Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that recreates stereoscopic sounds in all directions, and changes in real time, depending on the orientation of your head,” notes Yoshida, adding that Project Morpheus works with the Dual Shock 4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation Move to provide an easy, plug-and-play virtual reality experience.

"The Project Morpheus prototype is the culmination of our work over the past 3+ years as we evolve our vision for virtual reality. This prototype will serve as the first development kit for PS4 developers who share our enthusiasm for this new medium," he adds.
