Sony and Panasonic announced today the completion of Archival Disc, a new optical disc format.
To develop the format, the two Japanese companies had begun collaborating since last June, with the aim of the new optical discs being able to store multiple times more data than Blu-ray.
Thus, the first "generation" of Archival Discs will have a capacity of 300 GB and are expected to be released on the market in the summer of 2015. The plans of the two companies do not stop here, however, as in the future they intend to manufacture 500 GB discs, in a second phase, and ultimately with a capacity of 1 TB.
The companies claim that, due to their resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations, optical discs are the ideal medium for preserving valuable digital data for several years. So, at least initially, they intend the Archival Disc for organizations and businesses that need to store files for long periods of time, which they use relatively infrequently.
