Student caught using 14,000-core supercomputer to mine Dogecoins

A student from Harvard hacked the Ivy League's 14,000-core Supercomputer to use it to mine Dogecoins. University

According to The Harvard Crimson, a student was banned from all research computer labs and systems at the university after it was discovered that he had programmed the Odyssey supercomputer to mine Dogecoins.

The Odyssey supercomputer is powered by Intel Xeon processors and is ranked in the top 500 supercomputers. The system has 14,000 cores and is owned by Harvard's Research Computing office as a high-performance Linux cluster for researchers.

According to a copy of an internal email posted on Reddit when the incident was discovered, the unusual activity was discovered by a researcher, who reported it to administrators who soon discovered the Dogecoin mining program.

“Any participation in digital mining operations or for-profit contests that use Harvard assets is strictly prohibited for obvious reasons,” the message states.

“In fact, all activities that use our shared resources for any non-scientific purpose that results in personal gain are also expressly prohibited.”

The open-source cryptocurrency, Dogecoin is based on the Litecoin format and trades at a rate of approximately $0.0012, or 0.002 MBTC.
