Google has unveiled a prototype of a smartphone that can create 3D maps of its surroundings. As we reported yesterday, the new smartphone comes with the codename Project Tango.
The device's sensors provide the ability to perform over 250,000 three-dimensional measurements per second and to make real-time updates regarding its position and orientation.
According to the company, the goal of the so‑called Project Tango of ATAR (Advanced Technology and Projects) is to give portable devices a «human character» understanding of space and motion. Specifically, the phone (5‑inch with Android) features specially customized hardware and software designed to track/detect its movement in three dimensions, while simultaneously creating a three‑dimensional map of the environment. The collected data are combined into a single three‑dimensional model of the surrounding space.
«How would you feel if you could record the dimensions of your house simply by walking inside it with your phone before you go to buy furniture? How would it be if directions to a new destination were not limited to the address? How would it be to never get lost again in a new building? How would it be if those who have vision problems could navigate without needing assistance in unknown indoor environments? How would it be if you could search for a product and see exactly which shelf it is on in a department store?» asks Google of consumers in its related announcement, moving even further and talking about capabilities that also extend into the entertainment space, such as "hide-and-seek» with beloved game characters or battles between players who control armies of miniatures for area control in a house.
The company is seeking professional developers, «with dreams to create something beyond a single touch-screen application».
«These devices were built with the unique ability to “perceive” three-dimensional motion and geometry. We want partners who will push this technology forward and create outstanding user experiences on this platform» notes Google.
The company has 200 development kits, which it expects to distribute to interested developers by March 14.
