New updated Malicious Software Removal Tool 5.9 from Microsoft

Microsoft logoMicrosoft released a new version (5.9) of the malicious software removal tool in Tuesday's Patch.

The company has not yet disclosed any release notes, but the updated version likely brings capabilities to detect new malicious software.,

Of course, the application continues to provide support for all Windows versions, starting with XP and ending with the recent 8.1.

The tool checks your computer for infection by certain specific and widespread malicious software applications (including the viruses Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps you remove the damage. Microsoft will publish an updated version of the tool on the second Tuesday of each month.

The company states:

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Code Removal Tool scans computers running Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for viruses and helps remove areas infected with specific, widespread malicious code, including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report that describes the results, including the names of the malicious code that was detected and removed. The tool creates a log file named mrt.log in the %WINDIR%\debug folder.

Please note that the x64 version of this tool can only work on computers running Windows 7 x64, Windows Vista x64, Windows XP x64, and Windows 2003 x64.

This tool is not a replacement for any antivirus product. To protect your computer, you should use an antivirus product.

Microsoft will release an updated version of the tool on the second Tuesday of each month. New versions will be available through the Windows Update website and the Malicious Software Removal Tool websiteon Microsoft.com.

To automatically deliver and install newer versions as soon as they are released, set Automatic Updates to Automatic . The version of this tool that is available through Windows Update runs in the background on your computer once a month. If a virus infection is detected, the tool will display a status report the next time you start your computer. If you want to run this tool more than once a month, run the version available on this website or use the version on the Malicious Software Removal Tool website.

Also, be aware that if a virus is detected or any error occurs, this tool sends an anonymous report to Microsoft with the relevant information. The user must have administrator privileges to use this tool. This tool will not run on Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows NT 4.0 operating systems.
