Searching for “iTunes” via Google may lead to installation of unwanted programs

Security expert Chester Wisniewskiof Sophos warns users to be extra cautious when searching Google for the keyword iTunes.

According to the researcher, specially designed advertisements (Sponsored Ads) lead users to a malicious website, where it encourages users to install the application.

When unsuspecting victims click the download, they are taken to a website that informs them that clicking the download button again launches a separate application that manages the installation of iTunes.

Ultimately, users obtain a copy of iTunes from the real Apple website, but end up with several potentially unwanted applications ( PUAs ) installed on their computers.

During the installation of iTunes, the “Install Search Protect” software is also installed, which sets Conduit Search in all browsers, and blocks any other software that tries to reset the settings.

The researcher recommends that users download programs and applications only from the genuine website of the respective vendor or from trusted sites such as Softpedia.
