The phenomenon is well-known. Scammers use celebrity fame to lure their victims.
Hoax Slayer has once again spotted two messages claiming that Celine Dion has died. One of them claims to be from CNN and states: “ Celine Dion IS DEAD! Watch the entire video! Due to the content of this video, please be 18 years or older.”
Another message reads: “Hollywood Breaking News – RIP Celine Dion At 11 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 20, 2013), Celine Dion passed away in a plane crash.”
Of course, Celine Dion is not dead and there is no video. The links from these posts lead to a website where you will be asked to install a Facebook app to view the video.
Once installed, the app will start reposting the Facebook message to all your friends' timelines.
