ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security in Version 7, the most advanced detection technology protects against unknown and sophisticated threats
Athens, October 16, 2013 – ESET® today announced the availability of the 7th generation of its leading solutions, ESET NOD32® Antivirus and ESET Smart Security® . With new technological features, such as Exploit Blocker, Advanced Memory Scanner, Vulnerability Shield and ESET Social Media Scanner , version 7 offers both strong protection and ease of use, without affecting system performance.
“ESET’s goal is to create security solutions that allow people to use technology with greater confidence,” says Ignacio Sbampato, Sales and Marketing Officer at ESET. “Our new solutions continue to be distinguished by their low system performance impact, like all ESET solutions, while offering even stronger protection against new and unknown malware, thanks to unique technological improvements in the core.”
“Modern cybercriminals often develop strongly encrypted malware to evade detection. To increase the likelihood of infection and damage, malware spreads by exploiting vulnerable applications, such as web browsers, PDF readers, email clients or MS Office components,” says Palo Luka, Chief Technology Officer at ESET.
To address these threats, ESET has conducted extensive research, enriching the detection technology in Version 7 solutions with three new features:
• Exploit Blocker, a brand new feature that targets the very method of exploiting applications with security gaps, therefore its action is general and does not depend on the payload/malware family that ultimately infects the system. It offers protection against new and unknown malware, also known as zero day threats.
• Advanced Memory Scanner, a method that acts after execution, aiming to detect malware that has not been detected by other technologies. Its contribution lies in protecting mainly against malware that actively tries to evade detection by using various hiding techniques.
• Vulnerability Shield, which is the improved version of the Personal Firewall in ESET Smart Security, offers strong protection against attempts to exploit known network vulnerabilities.
“Version 7 of our leading solutions features new technological features, designed and developed in a unique way to work together harmoniously and proactively detect and block security vulnerabilities, such as the PDF exploit CVE-2013-0641. This particular one appeared in February 2013 and was named exploit of the year, both due to its high popularity, its multiple inclusion in Exploit Kits, and the fact that it was named the ‘Pwnie Award for Best Client-Side Bug’* at BlackHat 2013,” says Juraj Malcho, Chief Research Officer at ESET. “The new technology also aims to help address the issue of targeted attacks, such as the notorious RSA in 2011.”
“During the BETA testing of the 7 series of products, Advanced Memory Scanner managed to detect and collect a number of samples from malware families that often cause problems, such as Win32/TrojanDownloader.Wauchos, an undeniably infamous vehicle for further spreading malware, or popular Trojanssuch as Win32/Fynloski, Win32/Wigon or Win32/Zbot**. It is also worth noting that the technology has proven to be powerful in dealing with ransomware Trojans,” adds Malcho.
ESET 's R&D teams have paid special attention not only to detecting but also to neutralizing malware . The Cleaner Module has undergone improvements specifically for removing rootkits , while the Specialized Cleaner has been added to remove the most persistent malware.
Taking into account the results of Harris Interactive research***, and given the growth of cyber threats on social media, including spam and malware on Twitter, the new Version 7 solutions feature many improvements for increased security and include the even more advanced ESET Social Media Scanner (version 2). The solution offers control and prevention of malicious content on users’ and their friends’ social media accounts, allowing the user to choose between scheduled and on-demand scans to discover any threats. In addition to better scanning of Facebook, the new ESET® Social Media Scanner also offers protection on Twitter, while the Security Centershowsthe current level of security on Facebook and Twitter, suggesting changes to security settings. All improvements are included in the my.eset.com account. By creating an account at my.eset.com, the user can manage the protection of their social media profiles and protect as many accounts as they wish, their own or those of their friends and family.
It is worth noting that the results of a recent Harris Interactive (conducted on behalf of ESET) show a growing number of adult Internet users who connect to multiple networks daily. On average, these users have at least 2 social media accounts and 2/3 of them believe that websites do not perform good checks for malicious content. According to the survey, “Receiving suspicious messages is the norm, with 4 out of 5 users having received at least one, and of those, 91% have received it this year, mainly in the form of e-mail, and then as a text.”
Both ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security are certified for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. For more information about the solutions and their features, please visit the ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security pages.
