The secretive federal court that oversees America’s wiretapping programs has expanded the government’s authority to collect phone data, the office of Director of National Intelligence James Clapperlate Friday night.
James Clapper “has decided to declassify and publicly disclose that the government filed a petition with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to renew its jurisdiction to collect phone metadata, and that the court has renewed that jurisdiction,” the statement said.
So while in mid-August, after the public shock from the revelations of Edward Snowden, President Barack Obama said that he would review the US spying programs, it seems that everything is working normally and nothing has changed at all. The remarkable thing is that James Clapper himself declassified the document and made it available to the public, quite provocatively, we would say. Crisis of conscience, or are they afraid of the next Snowden?
