The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), a newly established agency in Britain to combat organised crime, has announced the conviction of its first offender. The case was investigated and solved by the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCU), which is part of the NCA.
Olukunle Babatunde, 27, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to five years and six months in prison for participating in a criminal organization and financial fraud against financial institutions and their customers, amounting to 751,229 pounds (886,000 euros).
Babatunde was also found guilty of stealing property worth 64,535 pounds (€76,000). In this criminal act, the perpetrator received assistance from another person, 25-year-old Tamara Abdulhamid.
Both were arrested for distributing stolen financial data. The perpetrators used phishing emails, tricking unsuspecting internet users into handing over their online banking account details.
“This is an excellent result, built on the joint operation and collaboration of the organizations. After examining a large amount of data, 765 victim accounts have been identified so far,” said Andy Archibald, head of the NCCU.
