Curiosity celebrates its first year on Mars

Curiosity

Curiosity is celebrating its first year on our neighboring planet, Mars. Our familiar little robot landed on Mars on August 5, 2012 (or August 6, depending on your time zone).

Immediately after its successful landing, it worked on the new planet, sending us stunning photographs and making important scientific discoveries, such as definitive proof of the existence of clean water, suitable for life, in the planet's past.

"Curiosity's successes - despite its dramatic landing a year ago and the scientific findings throughout that time - have pushed us toward further exploration, including sending humans to an asteroid and to Mars," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

Curiosity is currently heading towards its main destination, Mount Sharp.

It has taken him many months so far and will ultimately take him over a year to reach his final destination, due to the amount of interest he has found along the way. However, he is already well on his way, having covered 699 metres (764 yards) in the four weeks since he began the final stretch to his destination. He still has another eight kilometres (five miles) to cover in total.
