Def Con: Video shows hacking into cars

At Def Con 21, security researchers demonstrated that car hacking is not something that comes out of a science fiction movie. We have previously published several papers with successful hacking attempts on various car models. So cyberattacks against cars are nothing new, but the presentation by Twitter security engineer Charlie Miller , IOActive Security Director Chris Valasek , and Zoz , of Cannytophic Design , proved that car hacking is constantly evolvingcar hacking

Miller and Valasek demonstrated that they can drive a car from a laptop. They were able to not only steer the car, but also accelerate it, fasten the seat belts, play with the lights, turn off the engine, make the console show that the car is going 199 miles per hour, and honk the horn.

The experts plan to release 101 pages of code and details about their work.

The duo tested their project on a 2010 Ford Escape and a Toyota Prius. Ford representatives told Forbes that they are taking the hacking “very seriously.”.

On the other hand, Toyota says they are confident that their systems are robust and secure since this particular hack requires a wired connection to the car's computer.

Read our previous post that explains how.

“Our goal is to prevent hacking from a remote wireless device located outside the vehicle,” said Toyota security director John Hanson.

Zoz also agrees that “car hacking is coming.” He believes cars can perform various tasks on their own, as if they were robots, CNET reports.

The large number of sensors present in them can be blocked by a denial-of-service attack. In addition, a spoofing to obtain data about the car and the driver.

And the most worrying thing is the fact that these attacks require very low-cost equipment.
