95% of asteroids that are large enough and orbiting to pose a potential threat to Earth may have been identified, but NASA doesn't feel safe. That's why its executives have announced a new program to identify and deal with threatening space objects.
The program is called the Asteroid Grand Challenge and NASA is seeking the participation and cooperation of other space agencies, various scientific organizations, the private sector active in Space, and any scientist or amateur astronomer who believes they have something to contribute to this issue. NASA is seeking not only the identification of all threatening asteroids but also proposals for dealing with them.
"The program focuses on identifying and classifying asteroids and developing new innovative approaches to solving the problem that is global," NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver said during the announcement of the new program .
