For those of you wondering how Apple managed to achieve that unique design on the new Mac Pro, the process is called “impact extrusion,” and there are a ton of videos on YouTube showing you how it works.
As strange as it may sound, the cylindrical black “ebony” lid of the new Mac Pro is not made of plastic, but of metal. Aluminum, to be exact (arguably one of Jony Ive’s favorite materials).
What Apple does is take a round piece of aluminum, put it in a cylindrical mold, and start hammering it using a piston that pushes the material out against the walls of the mold. The result is a hollow tube that only grows upwards.
