It was a digital bank robbery: No masks, no guns, no police chase – all it took was a little typing and an elaborate hacking plan.
The scheme was completed in two acts, on December 12, 2012, and February 19, 2013, when an international group of hackers and fraudsters stole a total of $45 million from more than 5,000 ATMs around the world. The eight suspects are being charged without authorities having fully understood their complex scheme, if only to better prevent future attacks.
The infographic below (created by 41st Parameter and published by mashable.com) attempts to explain the fraud after investigating it and describes the process the group followed – from increasing limits, to pre-paid debit accounts in Omani banks, to transferring cash from ATMs in 27 countries. See the heist in colorful detail.
